Maps and atlases, 1682-1975, 1800-1900 (bulk)

Maps and atlases primarily of Brooklyn, especially Brooklyn Heights. Types of maps include topographical, street and road, auction sale, pictorial, historical, survey, railroad, voting district, ward, property and lot, geodetic, cyclist, military and battlefields including the American Revolution and Civil War, geologic (U.S. Geological Survey), marine, celestial, and Indian land. Many atlases show Brooklyn, Long Island, and New York State with some focused on farm and property lines, buildings, types of construction, and businesses. Maps of Long Island, Queens, and New York City focus on roads, streets, and transportation including subway. Other maps include areas of New York State and New England as well as other sections of the Eastern seaboard, some eighteenth and nineteenth century maps of America, some world maps, and a few made by the Dutch and French.

The Center for Brooklyn History was founded in 1863 by Henry Pierrepont (1808–1888) as the Long Island Historical Society, with a charter from the New England Historical Society in Boston. In 1985, the society changed its name to the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS). In 2020, the BHS made an agreement to merge with the Brooklyn Public Library. As of October 2020, the organization is now part of Brooklyn Public Library and is known as the Center for Brooklyn History....
